Post: Italy arrested a famous mafia boss

Categories

Italian police arrested 49 suspected thieves in a raid outside Milan on Tuesday, including five women, one of whom is accused of leading a local unit of the feared ‘Ndrangheta mafia.

In the male-dominated mafia world, female leadership is rare. Prosecutor Alessandra Serretti was quoted by local media as saying at a press conference that the woman accused of leading a ‘Ndrangheta unit in the Milan suburb of Roche was “more brutal than the men”.

The arrested gang members face extortion, drug trafficking, acts of violence and arson, police said in a statement, adding that some had terrorized people by threatening to send them animal parts.

Francesco Messina, head of the Italian police’s central criminal department, said the investigation revealed the extent to which the ‘Ndrangheta, Italy’s most powerful mafia, had extended its influence from its strongholds in southern Calabria into the industrial north.

In a separate operation, police arrested 37 people linked to the Camorra mafia in a raid near Naples following a three-year investigation into allegations of organized crime and drug trafficking.

On Tuesday, the Italian government dissolved the local council of Anzio, south of the capital Rome, claiming it had been infiltrated by the mafia, underscoring concerns about the spread of organized crime.
