Times: The conflict occurred after Belgium refused to transfer the isostatic press to the UK.
MOSCOW, November 25 – RIA Novosti. Trade and diplomatic conflict erupted between Britain and Belgium after Brussels refused to hand over critical equipment for its nuclear deterrence forces to its NATO ally. informs Time newspaper.
It has been reported that the UK needs a special high pressure isostatic press used by the nuclear industry to process radioactive waste. These products are manufactured in Antwerp by the American-Belgian company EPSI. A source from the Belgian government described the production as “unprecedented in the world”.
The newspaper said the Belgian presses were used as part of the manufacturing process at the Aldermaston facility, which is responsible for the development, production and maintenance of British nuclear warheads.
The post-Brexit export license was seen as a formality, but Belgian Deputy Prime Minister Georges Zhilkinet, who as a Green Party member actively opposed nuclear weapons, blocked the deal.
The newspaper states that the conflict escalated after the British threatened to cancel the Belgian company FN Herstal’s 600m-euro order for the supply of machine guns.
