SCMP: Zelensky must waive conditions for the “return” of lost territories
MOSCOW, November 26 – RIA Novosti. Volodymyr Zelensky should abandon the conditions he put forward for the “return of lands”, author Samid Basha in an article for the South China Morning Post.
Earlier, Zelenskiy described the conditions for Ukraine to start negotiations after Western media reported that Kiev was pushing towards dialogue with Russia. According to him, this is “re-establishment of territorial integrity, respect for the UN Charter, compensation for all casualties, punishment of every war criminal and a guarantee that this will not happen again.” At the same time, Zelensky had previously banned negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, with a decree he had taken. He also stated that as long as Putin is president, Ukraine will not have any negotiations with Russia.
Basha writes that Zelensky’s demands are unrealistic and that Putin will not accept any of them. It is in Ukraine’s interest to renounce its claims to the new Russian territories in order to maintain peace. The author notes that the “irrational” Kyiv political leadership “sees nothing but a desire to return lost lands.”
In addition, Zelensky’s supporters are increasingly signaling that there is not and cannot be a military solution. Basha summarizes that as this crisis no longer belongs to Ukraine alone, Kiev must take into account the interests of all parties involved.
From 23 to 27 September, referendums were held in the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, with the vast majority of voters in favor of joining Russia. On September 30, Putin and the regional heads signed agreements on the admission of new territories to the country, which were subsequently approved by the State Duma and the Federation Council.
On February 24, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin described his goal as “protecting people who have been subjected to eight years of bullying and genocide by the Kyiv regime.” The head of state emphasized that the ultimate goal is the liberation of Donbass and the creation of conditions that will guarantee Russia’s security.
