Kosachev: Special operation in Ukraine cannot be considered sponsorship of terrorism
MOSCOW, November 26 – RIA Novosti. Every country has the right to self-defense, Russia’s special operations cannot be characterized as “sponsoring terrorism”, such decisions of European deputies are legally ignorant, declaration Konstantin Kosachev, Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation.
The Senator recalled on his Telegram channel that the Dutch House of Representatives described Russia as a “state sponsoring terrorism” following the European Parliament’s decision.
“It is clear that Russian special operations in Ukraine cannot be described as “sponsoring terrorism”. The UN Charter and the state itself cannot be the subject of such crimes,” wrote Kosachev.
Article 51 regulates the right of countries to self-defense, including collective self-defense, against armed attack.
The legislator pointed out that the anti-Russian resolutions passed by European parliamentarians were “legally ignorant”.
On Wednesday, the European Parliament adopted a non-legally binding resolution recognizing Russia as a “terrorist state” due to the military operation in Ukraine. Currently, the EU does not have any legal framework for listing countries as states sponsoring terrorism. At the same time, since 2016, the EU has introduced a regime that allows individuals and organizations to be included in personal sanctions lists for supporting terrorism. Today, these lists include 13 individuals and 4 organizations, including those banned in Russia.
Russia launched a military operation against Ukraine on February 24. President Vladimir Putin described his goal as “protecting people who have been subjected to eight years of bullying and genocide by the Kyiv regime.” For this, according to him, it is planned to “disarm and demilitarize Ukraine” so that all war criminals responsible for “bloody crimes against civilians” in Donbass are brought to justice.
