MOSCOW, November 27 – RIA Novosti, Mikhail Katkov. Against the backdrop of a deep economic crisis and ongoing protests in Moldova, the government is changing. Rumors spread that the European Union was preparing an alternative to President Maia Sandu and the PAS party. What is happening in the former Soviet republic – in the material of RIA Novosti.

The authorities hesitated

The Ministry of Economy of Moldova was headed by Dumitru Alaiba, before that he headed the profile commission in the parliament. The Ministry of the Environment, the Legislative Assembly went to Rodika Iordnova, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs. Both are supporters of Sandu, who immediately warns that they will have to “put out the fires”.

Major personnel changes were discussed earlier in the month. And after several hours of power outage in parts of the country on November 15, it became inevitable. The authorities blamed Russia for everything, but suddenly it turned out that Romania had cut off the electricity supply from the Vulcanesti-Isaccea high-voltage line. Official Chisinau’s reluctance to understand the reasons for the state of emergency angered Moldovans as much as the failure itself.

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu said the change in the Council of Ministers may not be limited to two chambers. However, the dismissal of Prime Minister Natalya Gavrilitsa has not yet been discussed – it will be a very serious blow to the already seriously damaged reputation of the president.

Thus, the media published private correspondence between Sandu, his advisers, Minister of Justice Sergei Litvinenko, Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Son and other government officials. Apparently, they rigged the results of the competition for the position of head of the anti-corruption prosecutor’s office – thus, IMF favorite Veronika Dragalin won. Also, journalists claim that the president is planning criminal cases against former Attorney General Alexander Stoianoglo and his predecessor, Igor Dodon. PAS denies the accusations and considers them the result of a Russian provocation aimed at denying the Moldovan people from European integration.

European doubts

Every Saturday and Sunday for over two months, thousands of people go to protests in central Chisinau. They are dissatisfied with inflation (which even reached almost 35 percent in October, according to official figures), the energy crisis, the inability to supply Russia with agricultural products, and more.

An iData survey showed that more than 55 percent of Moldovans believe their country is developing in the wrong direction. At the same time, 63% claim their life has gotten worse in the last six months. Protesters are supported by 43% of respondents, and 34% believe the rallies will end with the resignation of current officials. About 54 percent favor early elections.

It looks like things will only get worse when Sandu announces that the coming winter will be particularly difficult and that Moldova’s GDP will fall eight percent by the end of the year. Many will not be able to pay their electricity bills without government support. At the same time, authorities report that gas reserves will last for a maximum of two months. Chisinau does not know where to buy blue fuel and at what price. In 2021, they signed a five-year contract with Gazprom, but Moldova will not come to an agreement with the Russian company on the repayment of a multimillion-dollar debt, part of which belongs to Pridnestrovie.

At the end of October, the protesters formed a parallel government and promised to take Sanda to court for betraying the national interest. In response, he initiated a procedure for the liquidation of the Shor party, which stood at the head of the regime’s opponents and called for rapprochement with Moscow. The Constitutional Court should evaluate the legality of the organization. According to Sandu, Shor is engaged in a hybrid war against the country. Allegedly, at the behest of Russia, the party is paying protesters to drive the republic away from the European Union and democratic development.

The emergence of an alternative

Meanwhile, the pro-Western Coalition for Unity and Prosperity (CUB) is gaining more and more importance after Shor demands the government’s dissolution. As stated in the party’s statement, during the socio-economic crisis, the Moldovan cabinet, showing immorality and incompetence, was stuck in “an endless galaxy of conflicts”.

It is noteworthy that party representatives on local television channels take place with such an agenda and do not suffer from constant searches. In this regard, the image of possible replacements for Sandu’s team for the coalition has been corrected. It is assumed that the CUB must ambivalently criticize the president in order to win over the protesting voters and those disillusioned with the current leadership of the republic.

In addition, the centre-right PRO Moldova party asked its supporters to send short videos with explanations of the government’s resignation to mobilize the voters. The organization was founded by former members of Vladimir Plahotniuc’s “Democratic Party”. For a long time it was seen as the gray superiority of Moldova and then expelled from the country through the efforts of Sandu and Dodon with the support of Russia and the European Union.

The “Bloc of Communists and Socialists” (created by two former presidents – Dodon and Vladimir Voronin) demanded the dismissal of the Minister of Justice due to the scandal over the election of Dragalin to the post of anti-corruption prosecutor. After that, Dodon was released from house arrest which he ended up due to several corruption allegations. The politician and his bloc are planning to join the protests against the government.

Romania is waiting

Experts interviewed by RIA Novosti believe that the Sandu regime is doomed – the only question is how long the president will stay in power. Moldovan political analyst Dmitry Kiseev says that despite low ratings and protests, the ruling elite can feel relatively safe until the next parliamentary elections in 2025. All this time the West will be preparing an alternative for Sandu, which has begun to build around new pro-European parties.

“The West has put a lot of effort into the victory of Moldova’s current leadership in the presidential and parliamentary elections to replace it with a team that is still being formed. The problem is not even in financing, but in appearance: its representatives from the Moldovan diaspora gathered in all corners of the European Union to vote. It is very difficult to repeat the operation, so the European Union chose to allocate 100 million euros to Chisinau on November 21 to overcome the economic crisis.” sign.

At the same time, he adds that even now Sandu cannot find professionals to work in the government. Thus, a person who devoted all his posts on social networks to supporting Ukraine, not the problems of his own country, became the new Minister of Economy. The chair of the Minister of Ecology had been vacant for several months because no one wanted to head the department. “The previous president resigned as a sign of his opposition to the decision to cut down forests for firewood,” Kiseev explains.

In contrast, political scientist Igor Tulyantsev believes that the Sandu team could leave much earlier than 2025 and that the purpose of the relocations in the first place would be to unite with Romania. “The pro-European parties are openly talking about it – in this way they want to come to the European Union and NATO by a shortcut. The West is changing the agenda, especially with regard to Moldova, it has lost interest in maintaining its sovereignty,” the expert notes.

However, according to Tulyantsev, Sandu continues the process of rapprochement with Bucharest. First it will finally bankrupt Moldova, then it will ask its neighbors for humanitarian reunification.
