Opposition in Chisinau protests ANRE building over increase in electricity tariffs
CHISINAU, 30 November – RIA Novosti. In Moldova, supporters and representatives of the opposition Communist Party and Shor Party are keeping watch at the National Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE) building in Chisinau, demonstrators expressing their dissatisfaction with the increase in electricity tariffs, RIA Novosti correspondent reported.
ANRE on Wednesday approved a new tariff for electricity, an average increase of 20% for household consumers.
“Today we are in front of the ANRE building, this agency is one of the tools of the government. The officials who decided to increase prices, tariffs do not know how the people live. We do not trust the ministers and leaders of the country. Chisinau city council deputy Yury Kuznetsov at the rally, they discredited themselves so much that no one had the idea that Moldova was protected. ” said.
In May, anti-government demonstrations and lookouts began in Moldova. Protesters are outraged by the unprecedented rise in gas, other energy sources and food prices, as well as high inflation and falling living standards. Protesters accuse the authorities of failing to cope with the crisis in the country, marking record inflation over the past two decades, reaching 33.5% year-on-year in mid-summer. The country’s leadership has been criticized for its unwillingness to negotiate better gas prices with Russia and for political pressure on opposition representatives.
Moldova is experiencing an energy crisis due to rising energy prices. The country’s government planned to purchase 33% of the required electricity from Ukrainian companies Energoatom and Ukrhidroenergo by October 15, but Kyiv said Ukraine has stopped exporting electricity due to rocket attacks. Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Spinu urged the people of Moldova to save electricity in the morning and evening, state institutions were instructed to reduce energy consumption. Officials say Moldova currently buys electricity from Romania at prices ranging from 190 to 348 euros per MWh. At the same time, Moldavskaya GRES, located in unrecognized Transnistria, under the contract sold energy to Chisinau for $ 62.5, but from November 1, the Moldovan side refused to buy the electricity produced by the station.
