WSJ: Politicians, environmentalists and culinary experts outraged that lobsters appeared at Biden and Macron’s dinner

MOSCOW, December 2 – RIA Novosti. The White House’s decision to host a lobster dinner at the gala dinner of US and French Presidents Joe Biden and Emmanuel Macron has drawn criticism from politicians, environmental activists and even culinary experts. informs Wall Street Journal edition.

American cuisine is famous for its Maine lobsters, and it was these crustaceans that were brought to the White House for dinner. However, lobster fishing in the state is now at the center of a legal and regulatory dispute over the potential damage from fishing equipment to endangered head whales. Previously, two conservation groups warned consumers not to buy Maine lobster. In November, supermarket chain Whole Foods suspended sales of its iconic seafood, saying it didn’t meet sustainability standards.

Against this background, the appearance of 200 lobsters from Maine at the gala dinner did not go unnoticed. “If Manx lobster is good enough to be served in the White House, why not good enough for all seafood retailers, including Whole Foods,” Maine Senator Susan Collins tweeted.

Organizations for the protection of the ocean and its resources have expressed their anger. “It was a bit of a shock when it was announced that Manx lobster was on the menu at the White House official dinner,” said Gib Brogan, one of Oceana’s team leaders. For dinner, he could have opted for more sustainable options like Gulf of Mexico shrimp or Atlantic scallops, Biden said.

Billy Milliken, head of the regional fisheries center, criticized the recipe for cooking lobster, which is cooked in oil and served with a garnish, according to the White House menu. “Unfortunately, none of these garnishes give it credit, but if it’s real Manx lobster, it’s hard to screw it up,” he said. Milliken recommends an old local recipe for steaming lobster with some water, ideally Maine seawater.

The White House released a list of nearly 200 people invited to the dinner, including Biden’s family, including Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, and her son Hunter.
