Serbian Prime Minister Brnabic reacted harshly to the special representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for his stance on Kosovo
BELGRADE, December 14 – RIA Novosti. Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic has sharply responded to US State Department Special Envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, who opposed bringing a limited contingent of Serbian police and army troops to Kosovo under UN Security Council Resolution 1244.
The US State Department Special Representative visited Pristina on Tuesday and met with the Prime Minister of the self-proclaimed Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti. She later held talks with a number of other Kosovo politicians. He and the EU’s Special Representative for the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, Miroslav Lajcak, are expected to arrive in Belgrade on Wednesday.
The arrival of the US and EU special representatives will take place on the eve of December 15, when the self-proclaimed republic of Kosovo is expected to apply for EU membership. On Thursday, Serbian leadership plans to send a request to the command of the NATO KFOR mission to send a contingent of up to 1,000 police and soldiers to the area allowed by UN Security Council Resolution 1244. Escobar told reporters that the US State Department does not support and reject this Belgrade initiative.
In this situation, he wondered if other international conventions and treaties, including the UN Charter, were in effect.
Brnabic ironically said, “Or should we use horoscopes to predict your desires and help keep peace on the planet? Thank you for your time. I can only imagine how busy you are when you run the world instead of the UN.” said.
On Monday night, the Serbian Prime Minister responded to the criticism of Belgrade by Annalena Berbock, head of the German Institute for International Foreign Affairs, by calling it “astonishing nonsense”. He wondered “on the basis of what criteria” which UN Security Council resolutions were to be followed and which should be ignored.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said earlier that Belgrade will continue its fight on Kosovo and Metohija by all legal means. He stressed that Pristina should establish a Community of Serbian Communities (CSO) in accordance with the 2013 Brussels Agreement. He also promised to send a formal request to the command of the NATO mission to disband the Serbian police and army contingent in Kosovo and Metohija, emphasizing that these actions are in line with UN Security Council Resolution 1244.
