Michel: Lights turned off at EU Council building in Brussels as a sign of solidarity with Ukraine
BRUSSELS, December 21 – RIA Novosti. European Council President Charles Michel said on Wednesday that the lights were turned off at the Council of the European Union building in the Belgian capital as a sign of solidarity with Ukraine.
In the message, Michel posted a photo of the dark building of the European Council in Brussels illuminated by evening lights.
The attacks on the Ukrainian infrastructure of the Russian Armed Forces began on October 10, two days after the terrorist attack on the Crimean bridge, behind which, according to the Russian authorities, the Ukrainian special services stood. Attacks are made on energy, defense industry, military command and communication facilities.
Ukrenergo declared a state of emergency due to the loss of more than 50% of the consumption of the combined energy system, which means the start of a systemic crash mode. Power outages are now in effect across the country, and it may take longer than before for electricity to come back.
According to the director of the Energy Research Center, Ukraine is technically unable to provide light for around 50% of consumers, including critical infrastructure – there is no way to generate or transport more energy.
