According to The Washington Post, after Zelensky’s speech, Kevin McCarthy, chairman of the Republicans in the House of Representatives, said he supports Ukraine but wants to control how American aid is used. Congressmen Lauren Bobert from Colorado and Matt Gaetz from Florida did not give the distinguished guest a round of applause. Representative Chip Roy from Texas called what he saw as “political theatre” staged by the outgoing congressional leadership. Hill notes that out of 213 Republican congressmen, only 86 came to listen to Zelensky.

According to Bloomberg, on December 22, the Democratic Party wanted to quickly vote for a $45 billion aid package for Kyiv, but was only able to do so in the second attempt. Republicans blocked the initiative for the first time. Democratic Senator Chris Koons stressed that some party members are also against it.

Joe Biden assured Zelensky that Washington intends to support Kiev for as long as it takes. Even if the Republicans are stubborn, the Ukrainian army can be supplied under Lend-Lease. As in WWII, aid recipients are assumed to only pay enough to survive after hostilities have ended.

However, not everything went well at the presidential level either. In a personal meeting, Zelensky did not hesitate to insult Russian President Vladimir Putin. The American was more shy. The Washington Post explains this by saying that Biden does not want a direct confrontation with Moscow.

For the same reason, he refused to transfer the M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. According to Biden, this could break NATO’s unity because very few people there are willing to go to war with Russia. Prior to this, the Pentagon noted that Kiev already has enough military vehicles, and American models are very complex. It is noteworthy that Germany previously announced its reluctance to supply Abrams before the Americans did.

Politico writes that Zelensky is disappointed. “We want to get more ‘Patriot’ (and not a single division, as promised. – Approx. ed.),” he said, surrounded by American officials and journalists. And he added, “I’m sorry.”

According to the media, Biden used the meeting with Zelensky to have a serious conversation about ongoing hostilities. The US President tried to explain that he was cautious, and his counterpart made it clear that Kiev only trusts Washington. At the same time, they tried to agree on a joint approach to future negotiations with Moscow, but The Washington Post writes that this is more of an academic discussion. In front of the people, the Ukrainian president simply repeated that entire regions “must be liberated”.

Experts interviewed by RIA Novosti believe that Biden needs this meeting more than Zelensky. Kyiv remains an American puppet and all attempts to gain independence are doomed to failure.

As for Zelensky’s unfulfilled hopes, experts point to the reluctance of about half of Americans to directly participate in hostilities.
