Deputy Prime Minister Serebryan: Political dialogue between Chisinau and Pridnestrovie is on the decline

CHISINAU, 25 December – RIA Novosti. Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Oleg Serebrian said that constructive political dialogue between Chisinau and Pridnestrovie did not take place last year.

Transnistria, with 60% of its population Russians and Ukrainians, tried to secede from Moldova even before the collapse of the USSR, fearing that Moldova would join Romania in a wave of nationalism. In 1992, after an unsuccessful attempt by the Moldovan authorities to settle the problem by force, Transnistria became a region de facto not controlled by Chisinau. Chisinau and Tiraspol participate in the “5+2” format of the Transnistrian settlement negotiations, as the parties to the conflict, Russia, Ukraine, OSCE – mediators, the European Union and the USA – as observers.

The last round of negotiations took place on 9 and 10 October 2019 in Bratislava. In February, Ukraine suspended the activities of military observers in the peacekeeping operation in the Dniester. OSCE Chairman-in-Office Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau said in a statement in Chisinau at the end of March that it is still difficult to discuss when and under what conditions the next meeting in the 5+2 format will be held.

“If ways of convergence are found in the economic or social spheres, and if in principle it is proven that Moldova continues to function as a more or less unique economic mechanism, then in the political sphere, I believe that there was never any distance after 1992. It was very nice.” aforementioned Serebrian in an interview with Radio Chisinau, a radio station funded by the Romanian government.

Serebrian noted that certain progress has been made in resolving the energy crisis.

In December, Chisinau returned to buying electricity from Moldavskaya GRES, owned by the Russian company Inter RAO (located in the unrecognized Transnistria territory), with which it suspended business relations on November 1. While Chisinau uses the reserves itself, it gives all the gas it receives from the Russian Federation to Tiraspol in exchange for electricity. Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Spinu said earlier that the authorities have chosen the most beneficial option for citizens, which has already led to a 23% reduction in electricity tariffs.
