Eswatini kingdom in South Africa plans to attend Russia-Africa summit

JOHANNESBURG, January 24 – RIA Novosti. The Kingdom’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs, Vulie Kunene, told RIA Novosti the previous day that the South African kingdom of Eswatini plans to attend the upcoming Russia-Africa summit, which she hopes will provide new opportunities for the country’s economy to grow. The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry will meet with the country’s leadership in Eswatini on Tuesday, this is Lavrov’s first visit to the kingdom since he was appointed minister in 2004.

“Eswatini attended the last Russia-Africa summit in October 2019, the delegation was chaired by King Mswati III. In this context, he has the intention to attend as it is an opportunity for the kingdom to build relations in the international forum and continue the discussions that started at the previous summit,” he said.

The second Russia-Africa summit and economic forum will be held on 26-29 July this year in St. Petersburg is planned. The first Russia-Africa summit was held in October 2019 in Sochi.

According to Kunene, Eswatini sees the summit as a platform for interaction with valuable players in the international arena and seeks to ensure the growth of the country’s economy through interaction with foreign partners in various fields. We hope that the organizers of the summit will prepare a program that will take into account our common interests as participants and identify opportunities for all of us.”

At the first Russia-Africa summit held in Sochi in 2019, Princess Eswatini Sihanizo Dlamini, who is also the Minister of Information Technologies and Communications, said in an interview with RIA Novosti that the kingdom will formalize military cooperation with Russia. In addition, Eswatini is interested in cooperating with Russia in the field of cybersecurity.

The Kingdom of Eswatini is one of the smallest states in the African continent, until 2018 the country was called the Kingdom of Swaziland. It borders on South Africa in the south, west and north, and Mozambique in the east. The country, which is located on a plateau decreasing from west to east, has no access to the sea.

King Mswati III is the last absolute ruler of Africa. He has ruled the country for over thirty years.
