Czech presidential candidate Babiš says he received a letter threatening him with death

PRAGUE, January 24 – RIA Novosti. Former Czech prime minister and presidential candidate Andrej Babiš said on Tuesday that he stopped talks with voters after receiving a letter threatening to kill him if he wins the election.

In the first round of the presidential elections held on 13-14 January in the Czech Republic, turnout was 68.24 percent. Petr Pavel, the former chairman of the NATO military committee, came first with 35.4% of the vote, while the dollar billionaire Babiš came in second with 34.99%. They advanced to the second round, which will be held on January 27-28.

Speaking at a press conference in Prague, Babis said: “The current situation has gone far beyond what I can really understand. It is climbing to crazy proportions, people are already threatening not only me but also my immediate surroundings.” At the Hradec-Králové district headquarters, which should be held on Tuesday, and all other meetings with the voters scheduled for the days remaining to the vote (Friday and Saturday).

Babish also quoted an anonymous threatening letter he had received, where he was specifically presented with a choice – “either lose (elections) or die or withdraw (elections) and so you will not only save your life but also honor”.

Babiš gave this letter to the police, and the police are investigating a threatening letter sent to Babiš’s wife since Saturday, with a live bullet in an envelope attached to the letter.

Babish’s second-round rival, Pavel, had to temporarily cancel talks with the voters due to the cold. The two candidates are expected to meet in the final debate, which is televised on Wednesday and Thursday.
