NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg approves the delivery of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine by Germany

BRUSSELS, January 25 – RIA Novosti. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg approved Germany’s decision to supply Ukraine with Leopard 2 tanks.

On Wednesday, the German government announced that it has decided to transfer German Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.Germany plans to establish two tank battalions, a company of 14 A6 Leopard 2 tanks from Bundeswehr stockpiles in the first stage. In addition, the training of the Ukrainian army in Germany will soon be held. Germany’s new aid package for Ukraine will include logistics, ammunition and system maintenance, in addition to 14 tanks and training.

“I applaud the leadership of the Prime Minister and Germany in delivering the Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine in coordination with other NATO allies and partners,” Stoltenberg said.

He added that tanks “can help Ukraine defend itself, win and survive as an independent state.”

On Tuesday, Stoltenberg visited Berlin, where he met with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. In Berlin, he expressed confidence that a decision on the supply of tanks will be made “in the near future”.

Russia had previously sent a note to NATO countries for arms supplies to Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted that any cargo containing weapons for Ukraine would become a legitimate target for Russia. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation reported that NATO countries were “playing with fire” by supplying weapons to Ukraine. Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov noted that pumping weapons into Ukraine from the West will have a negative effect.
