Zakharov on the adjoining territory of Estonia: we hope that Tallinn will comply with the UN convention

MOSCOW January 25 – RIA Novosti. The spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Moscow is moving forward with the creation of the territory adjacent to the Gulf of Finland by Estonia, with the fact that Tallinn will comply with the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and will not interfere with the passage of Russian ships. Mary Zakharova.

Earlier, it was learned that Estonian authorities are considering creating a contiguous zone in the Gulf of Finland within 24 nautical miles from the baseline of the country’s territorial waters. According to Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu, this will allow monitoring of compliance with the country’s legislation and will have a positive impact on safety, environmental protection and the preservation of objects of archaeological and historical value found at sea.

“Creating a contiguous zone is a common practice of coastal states, but under the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, it does not make it possible to control navigation, and even more prevents it. If it is the Estonian side, of course, Zakharova does not allow the navigation of Russian ships in Tallinn adjacent to the Gulf of Finland. “It is acting within the legal framework,” he said in a comment on the threat of restraint.

Zakharova added that Moscow was acting from the fact that, despite the plans for the adjacent territory in the Gulf of Finland, Estonia will strictly comply with the provisions of the contract.

Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov said that despite Estonia’s plans to create an adjacent territory in the Gulf, the Russian side expects maritime navigation in the Gulf of Finland to be ensured by international maritime law.
