Bloomberg: EU proposes new sanctions package against Belarus

MOSCOW, January 27 – RIA Novosti. The European Union is proposing to introduce a new package of sanctions against Belarus that will affect dual-use goods, the energy sector, coal, steel and gold products. transmits Bloomberg agency with reference to prepared documents.

Ursula von der Leyen, the head of the European Commission, had previously announced new EU sanctions against Belarus for its “role in the conflict in Ukraine”.

According to the agency, the proposed measures include banning the export of dual-use goods and technologies that are used for military purposes and are capable of boosting the country’s industrial potential. In addition, “sanctions on oil, coal, steel products and gold” will be introduced.

Trade restrictions will affect luxury goods, investments and the provision of certain services. Other restrictive measures target the country’s aviation and energy sectors and “main income sources”.

Approval of the proposed sanctions requires the support of all EU member states.

Earlier, the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said that Minsk does not intend to withdraw to hostilities on Ukrainian territory, especially because Russia does not want it either. “Western countries have accused and continue to accuse us of all mortal sins, they are trying with all their might to lure Belarus into this conflict, even though they are ‘up to their ears’ involved,” he said. According to Lukashenka, “Thousands of Ukrainian soldiers are being trained at the training grounds of Western countries under NATO programs, Western weapons and military equipment are supplied to Kiev.”
