UN Secretary-General Guterres Calls for Internet Restrictions to Prevent Hate, Lies
UN, 27 January – RIA Novosti. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has urged governments, companies and regulators to set limits to prevent the spread of hate and lies on the internet.
“I make an urgent appeal to everyone who has an impact in the information ecosystem today: regulators, politicians, technology companies, media, civil society and governments. Speaking at the ceremony marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Guterres said “hate and malicious lies.”
“I’ve also called for the adoption of a code of conduct that will ensure the integrity of public information so that people can make choices based on fact, not fiction. We all have a role to play. We can’t let old hatred find new outlets on digital platforms,” he said.
International Holocaust Remembrance Day is celebrated on January 27. On this day in 1945, the Red Army liberated the Auschwitz death camp. Auschwitz-Birkenau was the largest Nazi death camp and therefore became one of the main symbols of the Holocaust. About 1.4 million people died in Auschwitz in 1941-1945, including about 1.1 million Jews. In total, six million Jews died.
