Deputy Foreign Minister Grushko said that there is no point in Russia’s return to the Council of Europe.
MOSCOW, January 3 – RIA Novosti. Russia will not return to the Council of Europe, declaration Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko in an interview with the Parliament Newspaper.
The diplomat stated that the Council of Europe has ceased to be an organization whose main purpose is to ensure the unity of the peoples of Europe. Thanks to the policies of Western countries, “it (Council of Europe – Ed.) has been transformed into something opposite.” Underlining the deputy minister, the organization has become “the dressing room of the European Union”.
“There is no point in returning to such an organization,” Grushko said in the words quoted from the broadcast.
Previously President Vladimir Putin, to the State Duma, the Council of Europe’s international agreements in Russia, in particular the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, the Convention on the Suppression of Terrorism, the Charter of the Council of Europe. The document was published in the Duma electronic database. The lower house of parliament is expected to consider the relevant bill on February 16.
On March 15, Russia officially withdrew from the Council of Europe. At the same time, it was noted that official Moscow will implement the decisions of the ECtHR unless they are inconsistent with the Constitution.
Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced that Moscow withdrew from the Council of Europe because it did not want to be “a whipped child”.
