Turkey summons German ambassador after its consulate in Istanbul was closed due to threat of attack

BERLIN, 3 February – RIA Novosti. German Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrea Sasse told reporters on Thursday that Germany’s ambassador to Turkey was among other diplomats summoned to the Turkish Foreign Ministry from various countries.

“I can confirm that our ambassador, along with other colleagues from various countries, has been summoned to meet with the Turkish Foreign Ministry,” Sasse said at a briefing on Friday.

He said the reason for the search was that the German Consulate General in Istanbul was closed due to terrorist attacks. He explained that these measures did not affect the rest of the German diplomatic missions located in other Turkish cities. “They stay open,” Sasse added.

Previously, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu commented on the situation regarding the closing of the consulates of some Western countries in Istanbul and said that it is difficult to call these countries allies and friends.

The Consulates General of Sweden, Netherlands, England, France, Switzerland and Germany announced that they stopped accepting visitors due to the threat of terrorist attack in the city center. Ambassadors were summoned to the Turkish Foreign Ministry and told that such behavior was unreasonable, a diplomatic source told RIA Novosti. The consulate of the Russian Federation reported that it continues to work as usual. Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu on Thursday described the closing of their consulates in Istanbul by some European countries as a “psychological war” against the country, following US statements on the threat of terrorist attacks.

The US Embassy warned its citizens on Monday of the danger of terrorist attacks in central Istanbul. The targets are said to be churches, synagogues, diplomatic missions in Istanbul or other places popular with foreigners, especially Istanbul’s Beyoğlu, Galata, Taksim, Istiklal Street.
