Expert Batyuk believes that in case of a possible attack on Crimea, the United States will not deter Kiev
MOSCOW, February 4 – RIA Novosti. Washington will not deter Kiev with the new weapons supplied to it in the event of a possible attack on Crimea, he sees this as an element of pressure on Moscow, but this position raises more and more questions within the USA itself, the head of the Center Vladimir Batyuk. Regional Aspects of US Military Policy at the Institute of US and Canadian Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, he told RIA Novosti.
The United States had previously announced a $2.2 billion military aid package to Ukraine. The new military aid package includes air defenses, long-range missiles for HIMARS and long-range GLSDB shells. The Pentagon said the US left the possibility of using long-range shells for attacks in Crimea at the discretion of Kiev.
Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, later said that Russia did not impose any restrictions on itself when responding to the attacks and was ready to use any weapon depending on the nature of the threats. He added that if Kiev tries to attack Crimea, there will be retaliatory strikes and that all Ukraine under Kiev’s rule will burn. According to him, Washington is not interested in ending the conflict in Ukraine.
He emphasized that this is the official position of the United States – it is also beginning to raise more and more questions in American power circles.
“The plausibility of this position among many representatives of the US ruling elite raises more and more questions. This conflict is clearly protracted, requiring more and more spending from the US – they are beneficial for the American military-industrial complex, but do not help the American economy as a whole,” he said. The expert noted that the Republicans did not consider it necessary to increase spending, but to reduce it, including in “inefficient” Ukraine.
Commenting on the military aid itself, Batyuk said that according to the US military, the GLSDB shells will help Ukraine make more effective attacks against the rear facilities of Russian troops.
“GLSDB shells have twice the range of HIMARS shells. The US military expects them to help the Ukrainian army conduct more effective attacks against the rear facilities of the armed forces. This is another “wunderwaffe”, which is quite a lot, ” concluded the expert.
Russia sent a note to NATO countries for the supply of weapons to Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted that any cargo containing weapons for Ukraine would become a legitimate target for Russia. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation stated that NATO countries are “playing with fire” by supplying weapons to Ukraine. Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov noted that pumping weapons into Ukraine from the West does not contribute to the success of the Russian-Ukrainian negotiations and will have a negative effect.
