Equatorial Guinea confirmed its first outbreak of Marburg hemorrhagic fever, saying the Ebola-related virus was responsible for at least nine deaths in the small West African country.

In a statement on Monday, the World Health Organization announced the outbreak after samples from Equatorial Guinea were sent to a laboratory in Senegal to determine the cause of the disease, following a warning from a local health authority last week.

The World Health Organization said there are currently nine deaths and 16 suspected cases of the virus, as they showed symptoms such as fever, fatigue, diarrhea and vomiting.

The WHO said it would send medical experts to help Equatorial Guinean authorities contain the outbreak and also sent hundreds of protective gear to workers.

Like Ebola, the Marburg virus first appears in bats and spreads among the population through close contact with infected humans or through surfaces such as contaminated bedding.

If left untreated, Marburg virus can be fatal in 88% of people infected.

The rare virus was first identified in 1967 after it caused simultaneous outbreaks in laboratories in Marburg, Germany, and Belgrade, Serbia.

Seven people have died after being infected with the virus during research on monkeys.

At the same time, there are basic symptoms for people infected with the virus, because the disease caused by the Marburg virus begins suddenly with severe headaches and severe weakness. Another common symptom is muscle pain.

The patient usually has a high fever on the first day of infection, followed by rapid gradual weakness.

On the third day, the patient suffers from severe watery diarrhea, abdominal pain and cramps, nausea and vomiting. Diarrhea can last for a week.

Many patients also develop severe bleeding symptoms between the fifth and seventh days, and fatal cases are usually characterized by bleeding from multiple sites.
