G1: Death toll rises to 46 in Brazil flood, 49 more missing
MEXICO CITY, February 22 – RIA Novosti. A storm and record-breaking rainfall that hit Brazil’s São Paulo coast over the weekend killed 46 people, with 49 more missing. reported G1 portal
Record rainfall reached 600mm in some areas over the weekend in Sao Paulo, with moderate rainfall currently continuing in the area. Rescue efforts were concentrated on the south coast of the city of San Sebastian, which was affected by the weather.
Floods and landslides left 766 people homeless in the region and 1,730 people were evacuated from affected areas, according to São Paulo officials. The Governor of São Paulo, Tarcisio de Freitas, declared Guaruja, Bertioga, San Sebastian, Caraguatatuba, Ilhabela and Ubatuba disaster areas.
Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences to Brazilian President Luis Inácio da Silva on Monday for the tragic consequences of these floods.
