Crimean head Aksyonov: If the dam of the Kakhovka reservoir is broken, the peninsula will not be damaged

SIMFEROPOL, February 26 – RIA Novosti. The head of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, said that if the dam of the Kakhovka reservoir is undermined, Crimea will not be filled with water, appropriate measures have been taken.

On February 26, 2022, the Russian army blew up a dam in the channel of the North Crimean Canal in the Kherson region, removing the water supply to the Crimea.

Aksyonov said, “Precautions have been taken against the possibility of something like bombardment happening to the dam. These are bypass channels, studies have been carried out – even if anything, there is nothing threatening Crimea in terms of flow and wave height.” reporters.

In May 2014, Ukraine cut off the water to Crimea via the North Crimean Canal, which supplies 90% of the peninsula’s needs. For eight years, residents and businesses received water only from local sources. In 2020, the water supply situation in Crimea became critical as a winter with low precipitation and little snow led to a drought. Simferopol switched to water supply from underground sources, in the main cities, programs were introduced for the supply of drinking water to the population, which were in effect until the first half of summer 2021, when it rained on the peninsula. The Russian army opened the North Crimean Canal in the Kherson region with a special operation and water started to flow into the peninsula again.
