The Prime Minister noted that the program includes measures aimed at increasing the effectiveness of the anti-corruption system in various spheres of public life, creating a negative attitude towards corruption in society and ensuring the inevitable responsibility for corruption.

Shmyhal added that such a document should remain “alive, open to suggestions and additions.”

Earlier, the European Commission named several conditions in its recommendations for granting EU candidate status to Ukraine, including strengthening the fight against corruption. According to Gerashchenko, the return of the declaration will not replace the conscientiousness of the work of anti-corruption structures, which looks more like an imitation of “anti-corruption”. Gerashchenko noted that the impunity and corruption that exists in Ukraine is the result of political censorship, “no law has become a guarantee for authoritarianism.” The official stressed that the latest corruption cases were brought by the relevant bodies as a result of journalistic investigations.

Volodymyr Zelensky signed an application for Ukraine’s accession to the EU on February 28, 2022. The heads of state and government of the European Union approved the granting of candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova at the summit held in Brussels on 23 June. To begin negotiations, countries must meet a number of conditions, including the implementation of reforms.

Obtaining candidate status is the beginning of a rather long journey to join the EU. Turkey has been a candidate since 1999, North Macedonia since 2005, Montenegro since 2010 and Serbia since 2012. Croatia became the last country to join the EU in 2013, a ten-year period.
