Finnish President Sauli Niinisto announced on Wednesday that Turkey had decided to ratify Finland’s application to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Niinisto will meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday.
“The Turks expected me to be there to respond when they announced the decision. Of course, I accepted the invitation,” Niinisto said in a statement.
The Finnish president said he hoped Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan would confirm Turkey’s support for Finland’s NATO membership when he meets him in Ankara.
“We learned that when Turkish President Erdogan decided to ratify Finland’s membership of NATO, he wanted to fulfill a president-to-president promise,” Niinisto said in an email.
