NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg welcomes Turkey’s decision to start approving Finland’s application

BRUSSELS, 17 March – RIA Novosti. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomes the start of the procedure to approve Finland’s application for NATO membership in Turkey and looks forward to the early membership of Finland and Sweden.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Friday that the country’s parliament has started the process of approving Finland’s application to join NATO.

In a widespread statement, the Secretary-General said, “I welcome Turkey’s decision to move forward today by approving Finland’s NATO membership. This will strengthen Finland’s security, Sweden’s security and NATO’s security.”

He also expressed his hope that both Finland and Sweden would join the alliance as soon as possible.

“The real issue is not both Finland and Sweden quickly becoming full-fledged NATO members and joint entry,” said the Secretary-General.
