The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff warned on Wednesday that if war broke out between the United States and any other major world power, the conflict would deplete large reserves of munitions and stressed the need to prepare for such a scenario.
Since Russian forces began their invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the Ukrainian and Russian military have fired large amounts of artillery shells, raising concerns about US availability after Washington supplied Kiev with large numbers of shells.
During a hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee, General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said: “The great lesson of Ukraine is the massive consumption rate of conventional munitions, which is pretty much a limited regional war. “
“If there is a war on the Korean Peninsula, or a superpower war between the United States and Russia, or between the United States and China, these consumption figures will be exceptional,” he added.
“We have a long way to go to ensure that … our arsenal is ready for a real emergency,” he added.
Mill’s comments came a day after Department of the Army Director Gabe Camarillo announced that the United States is working to significantly increase artillery shell production.
Camarillo told an American Army Association symposium that Washington is “investing $1.45 billion in production capacity to expand production of 155mm artillery pieces from 14,000 per month to more than 24,000 per month by the end of this year. , which includes a sixfold increase in capacity. . ” Productivity to over 85,000 units per month through FY 2028.
According to Camarillo, the United States is also working on the production of launchers, Javelin missiles and ammunition for HIMARS missile launchers, weapons that have played an important role in the confrontation of Ukrainian forces with the Russians.
