Israeli Defense Minister Gallant orders the allocation of army resources to strengthen the police
TEL AVIV, April 8 – RIA Novosti. The press service of the Israeli military department said that Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant had instructed the military department to allocate army and military resources to strengthen the police against terrorist attacks and the general security situation in the Jewish state.
As a result of the deteriorating security situation, the Minister of Defense also decided to extend the closure of Palestinian territories in the West Bank and to close the border crossing with the Gaza Strip until the end of Passover on 13 April.
“The (West Bank) closure includes the lifting of civil measures approved prior to Ramadan and permits for (Palestinian) workers to enter Israel,” the press office said.
The Israeli army reinforced the infantry and artillery combat forces in the south and north.
In March, ahead of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, Israeli authorities facilitated the entry of Palestinians into Jerusalem from the West Bank and Gaza. Under the eased rules, women of all ages, children under 12, and men over 55 from the West Bank were allowed to enter Israel on Fridays without a valid entry permit to pray at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. An undetermined number of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip were also allowed to visit the Temple Mount for Sunday-Thursday prayers during the month of Ramadan. This year, the month of Ramadan began with sunset on March 22 and will end on April 21.
On Friday evening, a car crashed into a group of people on the Tel Aviv embankment near Jaffa and the driver was overpowered. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the attack as a terrorist attack. As a result, the teenager, who turned out to be an Italian tourist, died, seven more were injured. Doctors said all victims of the attack were foreigners. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the police and army to mobilize reserve forces after the attack.
