Biden commented on the elections in Turkey for the first time: The winner wins
WASHINGTON, May 15 – RIA Novosti. Commenting on the presidential elections in Turkey for the first time, US President Joe Biden expressed the hope of “winner wins” and emphasized that there are enough problems in the region already.
“I hope whoever wins wins. There are enough problems in this part of the world,” Biden told reporters.
According to the news of the state television TRT Haber, after the votes were counted from 97.78 percent of the ballot boxes, President Tayyip Erdoğan received 49.56 percent and his rival Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu 44.72 percent. If none of the candidates gets more than 50 percent of the vote, the elections will advance to a runoff on 28 May.
On Sunday, Türkiye is electing the country’s 13th president and new parliament.
Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan won the first direct presidential election since 1923 on 10 August 2014. He was re-elected for a second term on June 24, 2018.
Three candidates are vying for the presidency, but the real fight is expected to break out between the current president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the opposition’s sole candidate, Kemal KılıçdaroÄŸlu.
The second round of the presidential elections will be held on 28 May if no candidate receives 50 percent of the vote.
The main rival of the incumbent president, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, launched an election campaign against Erdoğan, trying to attract those who were dissatisfied with the authorities for one reason or another.
In Turkey, parliamentary elections for the Grand National Assembly, consisting of 600 deputies elected for five years, are held simultaneously with the presidential elections.
There are two major alliances in the current parliament: Republican (government) and People (opposition). 24 political parties and 151 independent candidates registered to participate in the elections.
More than 60 million voters are expected to vote in the country, and from April 27 to May 9, three million citizens living abroad voted earlier.
The polls opened on Sunday at 08:00 local time (coinciding with Moscow time) and will close at 17:00.
The results of the primary elections in Turkey will be announced at midnight.
