Politico: US Congress fears national debt could thwart Kiev’s support

MOSCOW, May 16 – RIA Novosti. Democratic Representative Mike Quigley, who co-chaired the Ukraine committee, said: Policy on concerns that public debt problems could be an obstacle to future aid to Ukraine.

“It all depends on how we deal with the debt ceiling … if we don’t deal with it, hell will reign,” he said in an interview with Politico.

According to Quigley, if the deadline for the extension of military aid to Ukraine in the summer coincides with the possible exceeding of the national debt limit, Washington will only be preoccupied with public debt.

“It will overshadow everything else,” he added.

The U.S. Treasury notified Congress in January that “extraordinary measures” had begun in connection with reaching the estimated national debt ceiling of $31.381 trillion. The White House demands Congress unconditionally raise the ceiling, and the Republican opposition-controlled House of Representatives attributes the move to budget cuts. Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned that the government probably won’t be able to meet all of its obligations until 1 June without a decision on the national debt.
