Medvedev: Conventional armed forces agreement in Europe has become irrelevant for Russia

MOSCOW, May 16 – RIA Novosti. Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev talked about the termination of the CFE Treaty, declarationthat this document has long lost its importance for Russia and nothing prevents us from placing weapons wherever we want, including the Russian part of Europe.

“The State Duma has condemned the CFE Treaty. That’s where it belongs. This document expired for us in 2007. But now, even in line with previously suspended international obligations, nothing prevents us from deploying our weapons in the places we want to protect nationally. Including the Russian part,” he wrote on his Telegram channel.

In his post, he once again conveyed his “respects” to the leader of France. “Note: Hello to Macron, by the way. In his logic, this is also a geopolitical loss for Russia,” he wrote. Macron previously said in an interview with Opinion that Russia had suffered a “geopolitical defeat”, embarked on a process of “falling into vassalage” from China, and was “becoming suspicious” of its historical allies. Medvedev disagreed with him, saying that with the claim of exclusivity NATO had lost its primitive course – the countries of the Alliance fall asleep and wake up to the thought of Russia.

At its plenary session on Tuesday, the State Duma adopted a law repealing the Convention on the Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE).

The CFE Treaty was signed in Paris in 1990, and an updated version of the treaty was signed at the OSCE summit in Istanbul in 1999. The adapted agreement was ratified by only four countries – Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine. In 2007, Russia suspended its participation in the CFE Treaty “until NATO countries ratified the Harmonization Treaty and began to implement this document in good faith”.
