Shimshek’s appointment was announced on Saturday by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announcing the new cabinet list.
Turkish media portrays former deputy prime minister and former finance minister Şimşek as one of the most professional economists in the country, previously reported to have received guarantees from the Turkish leader regarding the management of the Central Bank and interest rates. The Turkish currency, which lost value against the dollar after Erdogan’s re-election, is currently trading at 20.84 according to the country’s Central Bank.
