The introduction of the digital certificate of the EU standard will reportedly be the first step in the partnership between the EU and WHO. This step will be the first building block of the Global Digital Health Certification Network (GDHCN) being created within the framework of WHO and is expected to eventually include a consolidated set of digital products for the entire world.
“This partnership will include close cooperation in the development, management and implementation of the WHO GDHCN network, using the European Commission’s technical expertise in this area. The first step will be to ensure that the EU’s existing digital certificates work effectively as the standard,” says the document.
The digital certificate system was created in the EU at the initiative of the European Commission in 2021 to facilitate circulation within the union during the coronavirus pandemic. Later, EU standard certificates started to be issued in third countries to ensure greater mobility of citizens.
The certificate was issued in case of full vaccination, a negative test for coronavirus or an illness, EU countries may require travelers to have such a certificate upon entry.
