For the first time since 2015, Japanese authorities set a time limit for saving electricity in the summer.

TOKYO, June 7 – DEA News. The Government of Japan held the first profile meeting in five years devoted to energy supply issues, where the parameters and timeframes of the so-called “energy saving demand period” were determined.

The last time such a period was in 2015 when Japanese authorities appealed to companies and residents to save electricity during the summer months. Hirokazu Matsuno, Secretary General of the Council of Ministers of Japan, and Koichi Hagiuda, Head of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, especially attended the meeting. The period in which the government will demand energy savings, especially between 17:00 and 20:00, has been determined as 1 July-30 September.

Speaking at the meeting, Hagiuda said, “We specifically call on residents and companies to assist us in energy saving measures by installing air conditioners at 28 degrees Celsius and turning off lights where they are not needed.” said.

Also, as the Japanese media stated at the meeting, the possibility of re-operation of the discontinued thermal power plants and the risks of the need for rolling power cuts in areas where flooding will occur were evaluated.

The Japanese government is worried that next winter will be the most severe in terms of providing electricity to the capital region since 2012, when all nuclear power plants were shut down after the Fukushima-1 accident. Especially in the capital region, electricity problems are expected this summer, while in winter it will cover various parts of the country.

This heating season is likely to be the most difficult for the country since 2012. The reasons stated are the increase in LNG prices and the growing concerns about the stability of electricity supply.
