UNICEF: More than 5.3 thousand Palestinian children died in the conflict in Gaza

MOSCOW, December 2 – RIA Novosti. Catherine Russell, director general of the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), said more than 5,300 Palestinian children have died since the escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

“Before the pause, more than 5,300 Palestinian children were reported killed in 48 days of continuous bombings, a figure that does not include the many children still missing and believed to be buried under rubble,” Russell said. UNICEF’s website.

As the head of UNICEF noted, if the conflict “returns to its previous size and intensity, it can be assumed that hundreds more children will be killed and injured every day.”

On October 7, within the scope of the Al-Aqsa Flood Operation announced by the military wing of the Palestinian Hamas movement, Israel was subjected to an unprecedented scale rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. After this, the organization’s fighters entered the border areas in southern Israel, opened fire on both military and civilians, and took more than 200 people hostage. According to the latest data from the authorities in Israel, approximately 1.2 thousand people, including civilians, soldiers, foreign citizens and workers, lost their lives and more than 5 thousand people were injured.

In response, the Israel Defense Forces launched Operation Iron Sword against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Within days, the Israeli army took control of all settlements near the Gaza border and began carrying out air strikes on targets, including civilians in the strip. Israel also announced a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip: supplies of water, food, electricity, medicine and fuel were stopped.

Egypt condemns Israel’s ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and its termination

At the end of October, the ground phase of Israel’s operation in the region began. Gaza City was surrounded by Israeli ground forces and the area was effectively divided into southern and northern parts.

Since the start of Israeli attacks, the death toll in the Gaza Strip has exceeded 16 thousand, and more than 35 thousand people have been injured. Hamas claimed that there were around 200-250 hostages in the Gaza Strip. After the ceasefire ended, Israeli authorities announced that 126 Israelis and 11 foreigners remained hostage in Hamas and 110 kidnapped people were released.

The Russian Foreign Ministry called on the parties to stop the hostilities. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s stance, a solution to the Middle East crisis can only be possible on the basis of the “two-state” formula approved by the UN Security Council, which envisages the establishment of an independent Palestinian state within the UN. It borders the 1967 capital, East Jerusalem.
