Khasawneh: The potential of the Middle East cannot be realized without a Palestinian state

DOHA, December 11 – RIA Novosti. Speaking at the Doha Discussion Forum on Monday, Jordanian Prime Minister Bisher Hasawneh said that the Middle East region will never realize its potential if the decision to establish two independent states in historical Palestinian territories, including Palestinian territory, is not implemented.

“Without the implementation of the decision to establish two independent states, Israel and Palestine, the region will never reach its potential, there will be no opportunity for close regional cooperation or integration,” the Jordanian prime minister said.

Speaking about bilateral agreements on the recognition of Israel by a number of Arab countries, including Jordan, he said that “the scope of implementation of bilateral peace agreements will be very limited and there may be little progress in improving relations with Israel.” “It was achieved without the establishment of a Palestinian state.”

He expressed hope that the current deterioration of the situation in the Palestinian territories “will be a wake-up call to get back to the real issue and stop denying the realization of Palestinians’ rights and make meaningful progress to solve the real problem.”

The Doha Forum is an influential discussion forum. It is being held for the 21st time this year. More than 3.5 thousand guests from 130 countries, politicians, religious and prominent figures, and heads of international organizations attend the event.

On October 7, within the scope of the Al-Aqsa Flood Operation announced by the military wing of the Palestinian Hamas movement, Israel was subjected to an unprecedented scale rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. After this, the organization’s fighters entered the border areas in southern Israel, opened fire on both military and civilians, and took more than 200 people hostage. According to the latest data from the authorities in Israel, approximately 1.2 thousand people, including civilians, soldiers, foreign citizens and workers, lost their lives, while more than 5 thousand people were injured.

In response, the Israel Defense Forces launched Operation Iron Sword against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Within days, the Israeli army took control of all settlements near the Gaza border and began carrying out air strikes on targets, including civilians in the strip. Israel also announced a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip: supplies of water, food, electricity, medicine and fuel were stopped.

At the end of October, the ground phase of Israel’s operation in the region began. Gaza City was surrounded by Israeli ground forces and the area was effectively divided into southern and northern parts.

Since the start of Israeli attacks, the death toll in the Gaza Strip has exceeded 17 thousand, and more than 48 thousand people have been injured. Hamas claimed that there were around 200-250 hostages in the Gaza Strip. After the ceasefire ended, Israeli authorities announced that 126 Israelis and 11 foreigners remained hostage in Hamas, and 110 kidnapped people were released.

The Russian Foreign Ministry called on the parties to stop the clashes. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s stance, a solution to the Middle East crisis can only be possible on the basis of the “two-state” formula approved by the UN Security Council, which envisages the establishment of an independent Palestinian state within the UN. It borders the 1967 capital, East Jerusalem.

The Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which is linked to the regional interests of the parties, has been a source of tension and strife in the region for decades. In 1947, the UN resolution, which assumed the active role of the USSR, determined the creation of two states (Israel and Palestine), but only the state of Israel was created.
