WP: US defense firm L3Harris discusses purchase of Pegasus spyware
WASHINGTON, June 15 – RIA Novosti. The American defense company L3Harris is negotiating with the Israeli NSO Group to buy the scandalous Pegasus cyberspy technology. reported Washington Post newspaper.
NSO Group found itself in a financial crisis after the US imposed trade sanctions on it amid reports that authoritarian regimes were using the Pegasus program to spy on opposition politicians, human rights activists and journalists.
Defense contractor L3Harris is in talks with NSO Group to buy cell phone hacking spyware in a deal that could give a US company control of one of the world’s most complex and controversial hacking tools.
The news portal Intelligence Online describes L3Harris as a “leading competitor” for the acquisition of the NSO Group’s main asset.
The Washington Post quoted a senior US administration official as saying the White House was “deeply concerned” about the possibility of such a deal. “The US government opposes any attempts by foreign companies to circumvent US export controls or sanctions,” a source from the newspaper said.
The Pegasus program is known as a hacking tool for almost every phone, including the latest iPhones. Late last year, Apple filed suit to permanently ban any of its “software products, services and devices” from use by the NSO Group.
