The sirens of several air strikes in Kyiv sounded as French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Schultz and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi began a joint visit to express support for Ukraine, which is fighting a Russian attack.
The three leaders arrived in the Ukrainian capital on Thursday morning after traveling together overnight on a train carrying VIPs to Ukraine.
“This is an important moment,” Macron said upon arrival. “This is a message of unity for Ukrainians, of support, of talking about the present and the future, because the coming weeks, as we know, will be difficult.”
Romanian President Klaus Johannes will join three leaders in talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about what is likely to be Kiev’s bid to join the European Union, as well as the war itself.
It took weeks to prepare for the trip as three European leaders tried to overcome criticism over their reactions to the war in Ukraine.
