Anti-government rally in front of the parliament building in Moldova

KISINAU, 23 June – RIA Novosti. According to RIA Novosti correspondent, the opposition Party of Socialists in Moldova launched another protest rally on Thursday near the parliament building in Chisinau.

The demonstrators came with placards urging to stop the rise in prices and to dismiss the government. The situation is calm, the police are watching what is happening, do not interfere with the actions of the protesters.

Before the rally began, in a conversation with a RIA Novosti correspondent, the organizers expressed the view that the extension of the state of emergency would create the preconditions for a new round of crisis for the ruling Action and Justice party.

Earlier, the Emergency Situations Commission decided that due to the situation in Ukraine, the state of emergency introduced on February 24 should be extended for another 45 days. The final decision on this has to be made by Parliament on Thursday.

“The government is not interested in the impoverishment of the citizens of the country. It has brought nothing but the crisis and the state of emergency for a year. Now the state of emergency is being extended for another 45 days. The government will decide again. By bypassing the parliament. The authorities have only shown their helplessness, they cannot cope with the economic crisis,” said the socialist deputy Grigory Novak to RIA Novosti.

He added that people from all over the country went to rallies where they presented their assessments to the government, the ruling party and President Maia Sandu.

Anti-government protests in Moldova began in May, when a new round of price increases began. The National Bureau of Statistics announced that the average annual inflation was 29.05% in May. Food prices increased 32.5%, non-food products – 21.45%, services provided to the population – 35.27%. The opposition blamed the government and the ruling Action and Solidarity party for the economic crisis in the country.
