Earlier this year, in light of events in Ukraine, Japan expanded the list of previously adopted anti-Russian sanctions to include the Russian Agricultural Bank and the Moscow Credit Bank. Prior to that, Tokyo took additional restrictive measures against 398 people and 28 organizations from Russia.

In total, Japan has so far launched several packages of sanctions against Russia in connection with the situation in Ukraine. The sanctions apply to more than two hundred Russian companies and institutions, including 507 from Russia, 253 from LPR and DPR, and large banks.

Japan has banned the export of luxury goods to Russia, which includes luxury cars and motorcycles, as well as personal computers, expensive spirits and cosmetics, and high-tech products that include semiconductors and 3D printers. As of June 17, the export of trucks, dump trucks and bulldozers has also been banned. In addition, imports of certain types of wood, vodka and some other goods from Russia were prohibited.

At the same time, the result of a survey conducted by Teikoku Databank Ltd showed that only four of 168 Japanese companies operating in Russia decided to leave its market after starting a special operation in Ukraine.

Russia launched a military operation against Ukraine on February 24. President Vladimir Putin described his goal as “protecting people who have been subjected to eight years of bullying and genocide by the Kyiv regime.” According to him, for this it is planned “demilitarization and gentrification of Ukraine” in order to bring to justice all war criminals responsible for “bloody crimes against civilians” in Donbass.
