Mexican leader calls for the Statue of Liberty in New York to be removed if Assange is convicted in the US
MEXICO CITY, July 4 – RIA Novosti. Mexican President Andres Manuel López Obrador has said that if WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is extradited and convicted in the United States, he will try to remove the Statue of Liberty in New York.
“If he is taken to the United States and sentenced to maximum term in prison and death, we must start a campaign to have the Statue of Liberty in New York donated by the French demolished as it is no longer a symbol. At a press conference at the National Palace, the politician said “freedom”.
Recalling that he had previously applied for an amnesty to President Donald Trump, the politician did not rule out that he would raise this issue again in negotiations with US leader Joe Biden.
Earlier, Wikileaks reported that British Home Secretary Priti Patel had approved the extradition of Assange to the United States, where he would face 175 years in prison. The organization described the decision as a “dark day” for the issue of freedom of expression. The return decision was appealed. In the United States, a 50-year-old Australian is charged with crimes related to the largest disclosure of classified information in American history. He could be sentenced to 175 years in prison on these charges.
