A rally was held against rising food and fuel prices in Moldova’s Gagauz Autonomous Region.

KISINAU, 10 July – RIA Novosti. According to the RIA Novosti correspondent, a protest was held in Comrat, the capital of the Gagauz autonomy, against the increase in food and fuel prices on Sunday.

Gagauzia is an autonomous regional entity in the south of Moldova. In February 2014, a referendum on autonomy was held on the determination of the vector of the country’s foreign policy. More than 98% of the participants were in favor of Moldova’s integration into the Customs Union.

The rally was organized by civic activists and deputies of the Gagauzian People’s Assembly (local parliament). About 200 people from Comrat and other settlements of the autonomy participated in the action. The speakers expressed their dissatisfaction with the rise in prices in the country, criticizing the failure of the economic policy of the ruling Action and Justice party and the government of Natalia Gavrilitsa.

The demonstrators urged official Chisinau to listen to the views of residents of Gagauzia, who mostly favor friendly relations with Russia. Protesters noted that they do not share the official Chisinau’s position regarding granting Moldova EU candidate state status.

“The lack of transparency of the central authorities is surprising. They make decisions that undermine Moldova’s sovereignty. They talk about the advantages of European integration on television screens, but these are all general words. What’s the point of accepting Moldova? It’s an ordinary country to enter the European Union in 30-40 years.” an EU candidate for its resident?” – Deputy Grigory Dyulger said at the rally.

Moldova faced an unprecedented rise in prices at the end of the spring. The National Bureau of Statistics announced that the average annual inflation was 29.05% in May. Food prices increased 32.5%, non-food products – 21.45%, services provided to the population – 35.27%. The opposition blamed the government and the ruling Action and Solidarity party for the economic crisis in the country.
