The governor of Tokyo announced on Monday that Japan has reported its first case of smallpox in the capital.
Yuriko Koike told reporters that the victim is a man in his early thirties who recently returned from Europe and is currently in the hospital.
“He has a rash, fever, headache and fatigue. But his condition is stable at the moment,” the Ministry of Health representative said at a separate press conference.
The official added that the patient, who lives in Tokyo, traveled to Europe late last month.
On Saturday, the World Health Organization declared the monkeys’ rapid spread a global health emergency.
Since the beginning of the year, more than 16,000 monkey cases have been reported in more than 75 countries, with five deaths in Africa.
