US says there is no alternative to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty
WASHINGTON, July 26 – RIA Novosti. The US President’s special envoy for nonproliferation, Adam Scheinman, said Tuesday that the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) currently has no alternative, neither as a temporary option nor as another agreement.
The NPT Review Conference will be held in New York from August 1 to 26, 2022. It is the main event in the field of non-proliferation and disarmament and takes place every five years. Earlier, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken reiterated Washington’s desire to cooperate with all countries to protect and strengthen the NPT.
The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (in force since 1970) noted that only five countries possessed nuclear weapons – the USSR, the USA, Great Britain, France and China, as well as forbade the emergence of new nuclear powers. The “Nuclear Five” promised not to transfer nuclear weapons to other countries and help create them, and the other parties to the treaty – not to accept or create an atomic bomb.
