UN Security Council condemns MONUSCO attack in North Kivu
UN, 28 July – RIA Novosti. The Security Council said in a statement to the press that the UN Security Council condemned the attack on UN mission personnel in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and urged authorities to promptly investigate the crime.
Security Council members condemned all attacks and provocations against MONUSCO in the strongest terms. They stressed that deliberate attacks on peacekeepers can be considered war crimes under international law.
“They urged the Congolese authorities to immediately investigate these attacks and bring those responsible to justice,” the statement said.
MONUSCO is the world’s largest UN mission with at least 14,000 peacekeepers.
In mid-July, Humble Baity, head of the DRC Senate, urged UN personnel to “pack their suitcases” during a visit to Goma (the administrative center of eastern North Kivu province), accusing the mission of ineffective activity for more than 20 years. On Monday, mass anti-UN demonstrations began in cities in the region. On Monday, protesters looted the MONUSCO headquarters in Goma and its personnel were evacuated by helicopter. Three UN workers and seven protesters were killed in the city of Butembo, according to officials.
