Truss said there would be no new referendum in Scotland if elected prime minister.
MOSCOW, July 31 – RIA Novosti. British Prime Minister Nominee, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss stated The Telegraph newspaper announced that it would not allow a new referendum for Scottish independence if elected prime minister.
Rishi Sunak, another candidate this week, also stated that now is the “worst time” for this vote.
“Scottish nationalists have agreed that their referendum is a generational opportunity and I will press for it… I will work to strengthen our whole unity. As Prime Minister I will do what is necessary and right to preserve our unity. I have already done it regarding the Northern Ireland Protocol … Scottish independence “I’m pretty sure there won’t be a second referendum with me on the issue,” he said.
Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced her proposal to hold a referendum on Scotland’s independence from Britain on 19 October 2023. Sturgeon has previously mentioned his intention to hold another vote in 2023, but Prime Minister Boris Johnson has repeatedly stated that he will not allow a second referendum because people in this part of the UK have already voiced their wishes in 2014. Then 55 percent voted against secession and 45 percent in favor. The Scottish referendum will require the approval of central authorities.
