White House spokesman Jean-Pierre has called for the return of Ukraine’s Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.
WASHINGTON, August 10 – RIA Novosti. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the United States is urging Moscow to return full control of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and other nuclear facilities to Ukraine.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, Europe’s largest nuclear power plant was hit by Ukrainian artillery last Sunday, damaging the high-voltage line and forcing personnel to reduce the power of two power units. Maxim Buyakevich, Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the OSCE, said that the attacks of the Ukrainian armed forces on the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant are nuclear terrorism.
He added that the United States “highly appreciates the commitment of the Ukrainian authorities to maintain nuclear security in these difficult conditions.”
Located on the left bank of the Dnieper, near the city of Energodar, Zaporozhye NPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe in terms of number of units and installed capacity. Since March, it has been under the protection of the Russian army, although it continues to be operated by a Ukrainian operator.
Jean-Pierre added that the US is monitoring the situation around the station. “Fortunately, we don’t see any signs of high or abnormal radiation levels,” he said.
