MSU teacher Mukhametov: In case of a leak in the ZNPP, the North Crimean Canal will have to be closed

MOSCOW, August 13 – RIA Novosti. Sergey Mukhametov, a senior lecturer at the Department of Oceanology at the Faculty of Geography of Moscow State University, told RIA Novosti that in case of a radiation leak at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, the North Crimean Canal will have to be closed again.

“The fact is that the North Crimean Canal takes water from the Kakhovka Dam Lake and sends it to the water-scarce Crimea to irrigate the fields for irrigation. Dirty water will pass through the Crimean Canal and everything that grows there will be contaminated by radiation. Therefore, such an accident If it happens, the canal will have to be shut down immediately,” he said.

He stated that a possible accident at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant would be “more serious than Chernobyl.”

Zaporozhye NPP is located on the banks of the Kakhovka reservoir near the city of Energodar in the Zaporozhye region. ZNPP has been guarded by the Russian military since March to prevent leaks of nuclear and radioactive material.

Since the beginning of the special operation, Ukrainian troops made several attempts to attack the territory of the nuclear power plant. The shelling has become more frequent since 5 August.

On the night of August 7, Ukrainian troops launched a strike from the Uragan MLRS to the ZNPP, parts and a rocket engine fell about 400 meters from the operating power unit, Energodar officials reported. After the bombardment, the two power units did not work at full capacity. Rafael Grossi, head of the IAEA, expressed concern about the bombardment.

According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, on August 7, Ukrainian artillery again set fire to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant – the high-voltage line was damaged, the personnel had to reduce the power of two power units.

Vladimir Rogov, a member of the military-civilian administration of the Zaporozhye region, said that after the bombardment of Ukraine on August 11, one of the shells fell 10 meters into the concrete warehouse of nuclear waste at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. He admitted that due to the shelling of Ukrainian troops, the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant would be mothballed.

In May 2014, Ukraine cut off the water flowing to Crimea from the North Crimean Canal, which meets 90% of the peninsula’s needs. For eight years, residents and businesses received water only from local sources. In 2020, the water supply situation in Crimea became critical as a winter with low precipitation and little snow led to a drought. In Simferopol, Yalta and Alushta, programs were introduced for the supply of drinking water to the population, which were in force until the first half of summer 2021, when heavy rains fell on the peninsula.

During the special operation, the Russian army took control of the Azov part of the Zaporozhye region and the entire Kherson region, occupied such major cities as Kherson, Melitopol and Berdyansk, and cut off Ukraine from the Sea of u200bu200bAzov. New administrations have been established in both regions, Russian TV channels and radio stations are broadcasting, trade and transport links with Crimea are being re-established. Also, eight years later, the North Crimean Canal was unblocked, and the waters are flowing back into the peninsula.
