Pushkov denounced Moldovan President Maia Sandu’s support through gas supplies from Russia

MOSCOW, August 28 – RIA Novosti. Senator Alexei Pushkov commented Statement by Ilan Shor, leader of the opposition Moldavian Shor party, on the supply of Russian gas to the country.

Shor had previously asked Russia to “warm our homes” in a speech on the eve of the republic’s 31st anniversary of independence. “I am personally ready to go to Moscow to negotiate gas supplies to Moldova on terms that will not destroy our independence, humiliate the citizens of our country and cripple our economy,” the politician said.

As Pushkov noted on his Telegram channel, such a demand, given that Chisinau is unable to pay its gas supplies on time and pay off its accumulated debt, means Russia “really subsidizes” the presidency of Maia Sandu.

“It seems strange that Sandu does not hide his orientation and bad attitude towards Russia. What is the point of supporting today’s pro-Western course of Moldova with gas supplies?” He asked.

According to him, Moscow will receive in return nothing but a strengthening of this pro-Western course. “No thanks, no policy change expected from Sandu. So should we fund such a course?” Senator finished.

On February 24, Moldovan authorities declared a state of emergency in the country due to the situation in Ukraine and the energy crisis. Meanwhile, the emergency commission may have special powers depending on the evolution of the situation.

In October 2021, the country’s authorities agreed with Gazprom to extend the gas supply contract to the republic in 2022, subject to inspection of Moldovagaz debt. “Gazprom” said that, taking into account the situation in Moldova, it was decided to sign the contract practically according to the terms of the Moldovan side, but it depends on the timely payment of 100% of the current payments.
