UN coordinator Alakbarov: Afghans have exhausted their patience due to difficult situation

UN, 29 August – RIA Novosti. In an interview with RIA Novosti, UN Humanitarian Aid Coordinator Ramiz Alakbarov said that the people of Afghanistan have run out of patience and internal resources to withstand shocks.

Earlier, he described the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan as a disaster.

“The country is very poor. The situation is getting worse as the population of this country is depleting resources of patience,” Alakbarov said. said.

He pointed out that the conflicts in Afghanistan have been going on for many years.

“People don’t have savings in banks. The banking situation is pretty critical. There have been two consecutive years of drought in the last four years. In terms of food, all these mechanisms related to livestock have been exhausted,” he said.

“Last year, we saw that people resort to extreme methods, from the sale of organs to the sale of children, to cope with this situation. We have about 19-20 million people in need of humanitarian assistance on a continuous basis,” Alakbarov said. said.

According to him, 19 million Afghans continue to be malnourished, and 6.6 million are “on the verge of starvation.”

“That’s a very high number. About 25 million people across the country live in poverty. And that’s more than in 2016 — it was 20 million at the time. And according to our data, two-thirds of people’s earnings go ‘for food,'” he said.

In this case, according to Alakbarov, the country’s population has no reserves, “the sources of internal resistance to shocks and uprisings have been exhausted.” Therefore, the UN noted that the situation is very difficult.

In early August 2021, the Taliban* intensified their attacks against Afghan government forces, and on August 15, the Taliban entered Kabul. The next day they announced the end of the war.

In the last two weeks of August, Western nationals and Afghans collaborating with them were evacuated from the Kabul airport, which is under the protection of the US army. On the night of August 31, the US military left the Kabul airport, ending nearly 20 years of US military presence in Afghanistan.
